TinyStocks - Using a GSM phone

These instructions apply only to the Palms OS® and assume an infrared GSM phone with a built-in GSM modem such as the Ericsson SH888 or R320. If you have a different phone, you might have to change some of the steps described below. Note that not all phones that have an infrared port have a built-in GSM modem (notable the popular Nokia 6110). Check your phone manufacturer for the specifications of your mobile phone.

Settings for Palm OS 3.0 - OS 3.1

Download the Enhanced Infrared Update from Palm.
Follow the installation instructions and install the files IrLib.prc, SerialIrPanel.prc, SerIrCommLib.prc and AMX.prc on your Palm (Note that AMX.prc is not needed on a Palm V because it is already included in OS 3.1).
Launch the Palm "Prefs" application and select "Serial/IR" from the top-right menu. Click on the "Infrared" button.

Select "Modem" from the top-right menu and either clone an existing configuration or create a new one. The "Country" popup must be changed to "Other" otherwise no connection will be established.

Select "Network" from the top-right menu. If you are connecting to a normal ISP it is easier to start working with the "UUNet" entry. Enter your username, password and phone number. Tap on "Details" and select PPP as the connection type. If your ISP handles automatically DNS queries then leave the "Query DNS" checkbox checked, otherwise uncheck it and enter your DNS server(s). Usually "IP Address" is left checked. Make sure that the script window is empty (that it only displays "End").

Select "Network" from the top-right menu and click on the "Connect" button. If all the settings were correct, an Internet PPP connection should be established with your ISP.

Settings for Palm OS 3.3 and above

Launch the Palm "Prefs" application and select "Connection" from the top-right menu. Click on "New"

As connection method select "IrCOMM to Modem" and in the details leave the default options.

Select "Network" from the top-right menu. If you are connecting to a normal ISP it is easier to start working with the "UUNet" entry. Enter your username, password and phone number. In the "Connection" popup, select the connection you just created in the step above. Tap on "Details" and select PPP as the connection type. If your ISP handles automatically DNS queries then leave the "Query DNS" checkbox checked, otherwise uncheck it and enter your DNS server(s). Usually "IP Address" is left checked. Make sure that the script window is empty (that it only displays "End").

Go back to the network panel and click on the "Connect" button. If all the settings were correct, an Internet PPP connection should be established with your ISP.

Mobile phone

Activate the IR Port on your mobile phone.

Other connection options

There are other connection options than GSM phones with a built-in GSM modem. Here is a brief list. Note that Stock Manager has not been specifically tested with any of these configurations but we have received comments that they do work.
